Didn't think I'd be writing a blog today but since we are stuck at the Honolulu airport I thought I'd write one more.

We had to check out of our hotel at 11am so we did and just came to the airport as our flight was scheduled to leave at 2:25pm. We boarded and settled in and I saw a bunch of mechanics milling about the flight deck...never a good sign. Apparently our plane's battery charger stopped working so they had to change it out and replace the batteries. The Capt announced it would be a fairly quick fix, about 45 minutes, and then we'd be on the way. Well, here we are now at 6pm waiting for a flight from Anchorage to arrive and they will switch out planes and that one will take us to Seattle. I guess our original plane's problem, after they changed the batteries, was that the plane could not get any power...not a small problem.

The new plane from Anchorage is supposed to be here in about 45 minutes and then we are supposed to leave here at 7:54pm and arrive in Seattle at 3:34am. I hope I can sleep on the plane. This is kind of a goofy way to end a great ten days, but it is what it is.

We were very happy to see that the temperature got back in the 80s today. We had a cold snap yesterday as the high was only 79! We just finished most of our packing as we are leaving tomorrow. Forecasts seem to indicate that we may be returning to a Western Washington caught in the grip of Winter weather. This is a beautiful place to be sure, and the weather has been magnificent, and we had a wonderful time visiting all week with Barb and Dick...but we are also excited to return home and get ready for Thanksgiving when our whole family will be together at the island. I just hope the weather is good enough for the grandchildren to get out in the yard and play!

We have also concluded that we would come back to the Sheraton Waikiki. The Infinity pool was great and it must be the best pool on the beach. That's the key, it is right on the beach. We sat each day in one of those bean bags with our feet hooked over the edge, watching the turtles play eight in front of us. Very cool.

We, or I should say "I" had a little accident with the bean bag today. I tried to get into one and flipped over and slammed my foot into the bottom of the pool. It was really funny except that I think I broke a toe. Tonight it is the color of a Tootsie Roll... I guess ones' balance and reaction time erodes as one gets older...

Happy Thanksgiving to all and Aloha!!!

Thunderstorms woke us up last night but we awoke this morning to a clearing sky. We had coffee and macadamia nut muffins in our room and we were down at the pool by 9:30. Wasn't long and the high clouds cleared and the sun was as hot as ever. We sat in the water watching huge thunder clouds march into the distance on the horizon. It seemed they reached forever into the sky and yet appeared to all sit upon a glass sheet as the bottoms of the clouds were all the same distance from the ocean. It was very cool!

There was a couple sitting next to us from Russia. The man was a bit older than me and spoke with a Russian accent. He and his wife were on holiday. They had emigrated to America twenty years ago and this was their first vacation. By the late afternoon, after several Mai Tais, beers, Passion Fruit Daiquires, and what all, we were pretty lose and having conversations with lots of people in the pool. I almost drowned with laughter, however, when Dick asked the Russian man, "So, what's the best vodka?" I don't recall the answer.

Had a nice dinner tonight at Ruth's Chris and walked down to the Westin and back. Barb and Dick leave tomorrow night on a ten o'clock flight and we leave Sunday about 2pm. Hard to believe the week is just about over. Harder to believe we may be coming home to snow!!! Aloha.

Today is Joseph's eighth birthday. Happy birthday Joe!!! Dick rented a car today and we took off for Ko Olina. We stayed there in April 2009 and we wanted to show Barb and Dick how wonderful that place is. Disney is building a huge hotel complex right next to the Ko Olina so I think earn it opens, in the fall of 2011, the relaxing, quite atmosphere of Ko Olina will disappear. We'll have to find someplace else, I guess.

Anyway, we stopped at the outlets on the way back and I did some damage at the Tommy Bahama outlet. A guy can never have too many sweaters...can he? Rose found a great sweater at Michael Kors. We returned the car to the Hiatt and sat by their pool and have drink. Their pool is on the second floor and overlooks the beach. Only problem is that the beach is across the street so we had street noise and exhausts with our Mai Tais.

About five o'clock we walked down several blocks to a neat hamburger shop across the street from the zoo. Teddy's Bigger Burger. It was great! Rose and Barb split a burger, I had a seven ounce Hawaiian burger, and Dick had a fourteen lunch Monster Burger. It was a good thing we had to walk back to the Sheraton as we may have walked off a bit of that food.

When we returned to the Sheraton Dick and I sat at the pool bar and watched the last seven minutes of the Bear's game and just about the same amount of time of Washington's victory osier UCLA. We left so that I was back in the room by seven pm and Rose and I called Joe to sing Happy Birthday. Weather tomorrow is supposed to be chancy but I will be really happy to sit by the pool all day. I seem to have gotten used to that... Aloha.

I wasn't sure the weather here could get any better, but today it did. The Trade Winds that had been spiking up in the afternoon the last several days disappeared today. It was a bit disconcerting in the pool as I had to provide my own power to move around in the bean bag instead of letting the wind blow me around. Bummer! We also saw a mother and baby turtle right in front of the pool. It appeared that the mother was teaching the baby how to catch the little fish that swim close to shore.

The cocktail party we went to last night had a problem as they ran out of food shortly after we got there. We did get an egg roll and some beef on a stick, but they only had one bartender so it took quite a while to get a drink, and it wasn't very good when it came. Apparently there was another bigger party at the Royal Hawaiian we missed because Dick left his cell phone in the room charging. However, we know how to improvise. We walked over to the Outrigger Reef and had a drink in their beach bar, and then ended up here at the beach bar for a nightcap. The evening was not lost!

We are going to an Italian restaurant tonight and renting a car tomorrow to explore the island a bit. Hard to believe the week is going so fast. Also hard to believe we may be returning to snow! Mele Kalekemaka(I think). Aloha!

Tuesday, November 16, 2010

I was sitting in one of those beanbag floating devices in the pool today at 11am, drinking my first Mai Tai of the day, wondering what the weather in the Seattle area was like. It was a fleeting thought, very fleeting, and then I went back to watching the sea turtles play in the water right in front of the pool.

We had a great time last night eating at the New York Deli, really good corned beef, and then walking the boulevard looking at all the stores. I don't think we bought anything but we had fun looking.

This morning Rose and Barb and I had coffee and bagels at the Coffee Bean not far from the hotel. Starbucks was too crowded to get in - business must be really good Megan - and we had seen this place when we left the deli the night before. We had seen many Coffee Beans on our trip to OR and CA. Weather today was perfect, sunny, about 83 degrees, and the afternoon Trade Winds kept us cooled off. Winds are supposed to die off tomorrow but I can't believe it can get any better than today.

Tonight we are going to a cocktail party with Barb and Dick so it looks like I won't have to crash the big private party like I did last night just to get some desert. There's a story there I'll need to tell you sometime. Aloha!

We never made it to Duke's last night for dinner. Rose and I decided to stop at the Royal Hawaian beach bar for a drink and we would wait there until Barb and Dick could join us. Long story short...we never left the beach bar! Barb and Dick got there about 6:45 and we just ordered there and enjoyed the beach, ocean, and Hawaiian music. It turned out to be a great choice!

Today Dick had meetings all day so Rose and Barb and I left the hotel at 8:30 and walked to a Starbucks for coffee and a scone. We then walked several blocks visiting a few stores and got to the pool right close to 11am. Was a little cloudy but the clods disappeared about 1pm and we got plenty of sun. Turtles were playing right in front of the pool again today. We have heard the whales are also making their migration close to the islands but we have not seen one yet.

On our walk this morning we found a little deli that we are going to try for dinner tonight. Dick has rented a car for Thursday, a Mustang convertible, and we are going to the North Shore and then to Ko Olina and then to the Tommy Bahama outlet store. I really don't need any clothes, but Tommy Bahama outlet!!! I must see what they have. Aloha!
